FC Sheriff 1-2 Marseille Match Report

Marseille claimed a 2-1 away victory against Moldovan side FC Sheriff. It was a fairly comfortable win for OM who played well in patches without really having to break sweat. However, a slip of concentration at the end of the game nearly gave away the victory and OM were fortunate to avoid conceding a 2nd.

OM started the game well and were clearly the better side, showing their extra class. Gignac had a massive chance inside the opening 10 mins but fired wide at an angle when the goal was gaping open. The visitors kept knocking on the door and eventually found a way through in the 18th minute when Jordan Ayew fired a sweet volley into the net. But going ahead seemed to make OM relax more and they took their foot off the gas. They didn’t create anything else before HT and were content to just sit back.

At the start of the 2nd half, OM had a very dominant period of possession where Sheriff were just content to let their opponents knock it around at ease. Most of the possession was innocuous and lacked threat, but the ability to keep the ball was a major plus point for OM all night. It was during this period that they added a 2nd goal as well. Gignac crossed dangerously and the ball eventually fell to Jordan Ayew who scuffed his volley, but still found the net.

Up until the 70 minute mark the match was a stroll in the park for OM, but perhaps they lost concentration late on thinking it was all too easy. Steve Mandanda had to make a superb reflex save on the line to keep OM ahead, and then just afterwards Sheriff missed a very big chance from close range as well. By then, OM had pretty much decided to shut up shop and aimed to hold onto their advantage. In the end they managed to achieve this, but not without a scare in the losing moments.

Overall the result was positive, most of the performances were positive and I would expect a comfortable win in the 2nd leg. With all due respect, Sheriff weren’t much of a side and they will never leave any decent team quaking in their boots. It was noticeable that a lot of the OM players switched off sometimes perhaps with their mind on the crucial upcoming Ligue 1 match away at Montpellier on Sunday.
