OM Silence Bastia
Marseille gained some self-respect with a hard fought win away at Bastia, following their home trouncing at the hands of Lorient last weekend. A stupendous Valbuena volley got OM up and running in the 15th minute, as Marseille gained the upper hand in the empty Stade Armand Cesari (the game being played behind closed doors after crowd trouble in the Corsican derby last month).
As the game progressed Marseille looked more comfortable and should have perhaps doubled their lead before half-time if it wasn’t for some wasted chances from both Ayews and Amalfitano.
Marseille made sure of the victory in the 70th minutes through an Ayew combination. After Jordan was fouled in Bastia’s penalty box, his brother Andre stepped up to dispatch the spot kick past Bonnefoi.
As has become tradition with Marseille recently though, OM opted to make life difficult for themselves in the final stages of the game. A combination of better pressing from the home side and some sloppy passing from OM gifted Bastia a few half-chances. After some poor finishing, Modeste made no mistake in beating Mandanda in the final 10 minutes.
With 5 minutes to go Baup brought on the fit again Gignac, who had a few half chances, but would have benefited from an opportunity to stretch his legs ahead of his return to Toulouse this coming weekend.
