Kits

At present on this page you will find a collection of my football shirts that I have collected from an early age. Over time I would like to add people wearing their Marseille shirts in famous or scenic places. I will also happily add any rare or interesting shirts that people have that they would like to show off (in fact, any that has an interesting story or sentiment attached will do as well). If you would like to contribute to the page contact me through twitter (@MarseilleUK).

My collection

England 1980-83

Team: England

Make: Admiral

Year: 1980-1983

This is my Dad’s shirt that I have claimed but love this simple retro classic.

Photo 01-06-2013 16 36 11

Team: Tottenham Hotspur (Away)

Make: Hummel

Year: 1988-1991

This shirt was given to me by a relative during the mid-90’s. Although I have no affiliation to ‘Spurs the top always reminded me of Gazza, so I didn’t turn it down.

Photo 01-06-2013 16 43 55

Team: England (Away)

Make: Umbro

Year: 1990-1993

Photo 01-06-2013 17 29 44

Team: Newcastle United

Make: Umbro

Year: 1990-1993

My first home NUFC top, with the amended ‘Blue Star’ sewn own. The original shirt had no sponsor (I’m not sure if that was because it was a junior shirt or just bought between Greenalls and Newcastle Breweries.).

Photo 01-06-2013 17 31 28

Team: Newcastle United (away)

Make: Umbro

Year: 1990-1993

This was my first ever NUFC shirt. It originally had the Greenalls sponsorship, but I was given a ‘sew on’ McEwans Lager patch in return for a corner of the inside tag. The shirt also has the original Football League patches on the sleaves.

Photo 01-06-2013 17 54 51

Team: Newcastle United (retro release)

Make: Score Draw (Umbro imitation)

Year: 1990-1991

Amid the current trend of retro shirts I had to buy this. Since the original was my first ever NUFC shirt, it was a simple choice. Nice touches to the shirt are the raised club badge, Umbro styled watermarks and buttoned collor that appeared on the original.

Photo 01-06-2013 21 59 07

Team: Marseille

Make: Adidas

Year: 1993-1994

This classic was my first ever Marseille shirt. During the mid-90’s I was lucky enough to go on a few football trips with my junior football team, Wideopen Juniors. On our first trip we visited Halluin, in north-eastern France on the Belgian border. After a few friendly games against the local teams I swapped my NUFC shirt for this. This is the shirt that helped breed my love for Marseille.

Photo 01-06-2013 17 13 11

Team: Chelsea

Make: Unbro

Year: 1993-1994

In the summer after my football trip to Halluin, my family stayed in a caravan in the south of France (near Hyeres to be precice). On this holiday I bought the 1997-1998? shirt you will see further down the page. But, when stopping off in London to visit family I founbd this shirt abandoned in Hyde Park.

Photo 01-06-2013 17 32 17

Team: Newcastle United

Make: Asics

Year: 1993-1995

A lovely simple design by Asics, with one of my favourite features being the samples of away shirt under the button for the collor, and on the shirt trim too.

Photo 01-06-2013 17 33 26

Team: Newcastle United (away)

Make: Asics

Year: 1993-1995

Another great shirt in my opinion, although if my memory serves me correctly this shirt ‘clicked’ something rotten. I’m sure this shirt was my second and you can still see a number of ‘clicks’ on the top.

Photo 01-06-2013 17 34 13

Team: Newcastle United (3rd)

Make: Asics

Year: 1993-1995

Despite only wearing this kit twice (if memory serves correctly) I still liked the simple design and colour scheme, despite it being very different to anything NUFC had worn before.

Photo 01-06-2013 17 23 18

Team: Rangers (away)

Make: Adidas

Year: 1994-1995

I have a lot of close family ties to Rangers, and this shirt is one of my all time favourites. The embossed style Rangers logo on the chest might be a bit ‘busy’ and ‘OTT’ by today’s standards, but I still think this was Adidas at its creative best.

Photo 01-06-2013 16 49 42

Team: France

Make: Adidas

Year: 1994-1996

Another shirt obtained on my football trip to Halluin. The club secretary of the team we played took me to a huge local sports store and my hard earned paper-round money purchased me this French national classic. I had been torn between this, a Lille and RC Lens shirt, but this one held out.

Photo 01-06-2013 17 08 27

Team: Italy

Make: Nike

Year: 1994-1996

Around this time I held a slight affiliation with Juventus, down to the legend, Del Piero, and as such also had a soft spot for the Italian national team. The great watermark on the shirt and Italian flag piping are some of the highlights for me on this shirt.

Photo 01-06-2013 16 48 14

Team: Columbia

Make: Umbro

Year: 1995-1996

Photo 01-06-2013 17 07 55

Team: Halifax Town

Make: Uhlsport

Year: 1995-1996

I also have some of my good family from Halifax, and one special Christmas I was kindly bought this Halifax shirt. The very shirt that Geoff Horsfield started his career in too. A simple but stylish design from Uhlsport.

Photo 01-06-2013 17 09 51

Team: Borussia Dortmund (away)

Make: Nike

Year: 1995-1996

Having visted Halluin, twice with Wideopen Juniors, we then visted Esterwegen in Germany. On this trip I remember seeing what must have been the Hale-Bopp coment as well as netting in a penalty shoot-out for my first (and probably last) time. This shirt didn’t fit me at the time, and still doesn’t fit me as an adult, but at least allows me to avoid being called a ‘hipster’ for having a soft-spot for BVB.

Photo 01-06-2013 17 36 55 Team: Newcastle United

Make: Adidas

Year: 1995-1997

A truely classic NUFC shirt, with the ‘Grandad’ style collor. Adidas’ first NUFC kit did not dissapoint. I do believe I was one of the first people in Newcastle to own this shirt as a family friend opened his sports shop for me and my dad before opening hours as I was going on holiday to Edinburgh with my grandparents early in the morning.

95-97 NUFC away

Team: Newcastle United (away)

Make: Adidas

Year: 1995-1997

This is the shirt I swapped for my first Marseille shirt, so again had to buy this retro re-make of a beautiful shirt.

Photo 01-06-2013 17 11 16Photo 01-06-2013 17 11 32

Team: SV Meppen (away)

Make: Ruesch

Year: 1995-1996

Another shirt that I gained when in Esterwegen, Germany. This was a lower league German club (3rd/4th tier, at the time). Probably one of the rarest shirts I own, but an interesting design nonetheless.

Photo 01-06-2013 17 24 43

Team: Rangers (away)

Make: Adidas

Year: 1996-1997

Another Rangers shirt, and another variation of Adidas’ stripes on the shirt. Some nice Rangers’ watermarks can be seen on borth the red and white matrial.

Photo 01-06-2013 17 38 13

Team: Newcastle United (away)

Make: Adidas

Year: 1996-1997

Not one of my favourites, but another ‘stripes on the shirt’ shirt from Adidas.

Photo 01-06-2013 16 54 03Photo 01-06-2013 16 54 24

Team: Marseille (away)

Make: Adidas

Year: 1997-1998?

This was the first Marseille shirt that I bought, and purchased it at the Stade Velodrome club shop. Me and my dad then managed to sneak into the Virage Sud and take some pictures after a set of shutters were left opened.

Photo 01-06-2013 17 21 36Photo 01-06-2013 17 21 01

Team: Juventus (Centenary home)

Make: Kappa

Year: 1997-1998

The black and white stripes and Del Piero were what lead me to Juventus, but a few of their Kappa shirts were outstanding. The badge on the sleeve, the curved stripes on the sleeve and back of the shirt were just some of the features I loved on this top.

Photo 01-06-2013 17 30 04

Team: Rangers

Make: Nike

Year: 1997-1999

Photo 01-06-2013 17 40 08

Team: Newcastle United (away)

Make: Adidas

Year: 1997-1998

In all honesty, probably one of the worst NUFC tops I own, however, I wore this on a trip to Eindhoven in the Champions League. Despite the rediculously long coach/ferry/coach (and return) journey I had an incredible time as a 13 year old, and so this shirt possibly hold more sentimental value than most others put together.

Photo 01-06-2013 17 41 25 Photo 01-06-2013 17 41 38

Team: Newcastle United

Make: Adidas

Year: 1997-1999

More Wembley heartache associated with this top, but the shield and Newcastle United ribbon on the reverse of the shirt are some of the nice creative features on this top.

Photo 01-06-2013 17 03 20

Team: South Africa (away)

Make: Kappa

Year: 1998

Photo 01-06-2013 16 58 14

Team: Marseille (Centenary away)

Make: Adidas

Year: 1998-1999

This was not actually the shirt I intended to buy, but a reputably online sports company mixed up my order and delivered this instead of the limited edition gold 3rd centenery shirt. Photo 01-06-2013 17 43 04

Team: Newcastle United (away)

Make: Adidas

Year: 1998-1999

On face value this Adidas NUFC shirt is quite nice, but looking back, I am not a big fan of the whole ‘shiny’ shirt thing they had going in the late 90’s.

Photo 01-06-2013 16 56 46

Team: Marseille (3rd)

Make: Adidas

Year: 1999-2000

Another nice design, somewhat ruined by the ‘shiny’ Adidas finish.

Photo 01-06-2013 17 44 45

Team: Newcastle United (away)

Make: Adidas

Year: 1999-2000

Year: 2000-2001

Photo 01-06-2013 17 20 29

Team: Juventus (away)

Make: Lotto

Year: 2000-2001

My only away Juventus shirt, but one of the few Lotto shirts I have seen where the lotto logo actually works because of the navy blue colouring of the shirt.

Photo 01-06-2013 18 16 51

Team: Real Mallorca

Make: Real

Year: 2003-2005

As well as a soft spot for Real Mallorca as NUFC played them in Europe, I bought this shirt on my first holiday away without my family, and with (at the time) my future wife. An XL shirt was all they had in the airport, so again I have another shirt that has never fit properly.

Photo 01-06-2013 17 14 13

Team: Juventus

Make: Nike

Year: 2004-2005

Other than the black and white stripes this was an awful shirt. Adequate design, but terrible fit and abyslmal material.

Photo 01-06-2013 18 50 42

Team: p*g

Make: Nike

Year: 2004-2005

As an OM fan I am rather ashamed to own this. The only positive is that I bought it from a market when holidaying on the Norfolk Broads, therefore I am certain psg made no money out of the buy. As with the Juve shirt above, poor design, awful material and awful fit. At the time I was torn between this and a Chicago Fire home shirt, I regretted my choice almost immediately!

Photo 01-06-2013 18 17 26

Team: UD Lanzarote

Make: Dalypso

Year: 2005-2006?

Having searched for 2 weeks in Lanzarote for a shirt and failing, my parents managed to find one a month later having ventured into Aricefe and finding the club shop (a small room) just about to close. This shirt is another rare one and has my lucky number 3 on the back.

Photo 01-06-2013 18 26 23

Team: Hercules CF (away)

Make: Kelme

Year: 2006-2007

I am lucky enough to have family who own some property in the Alicante area of Spain. I have since tried to buy a number of the local teams shirts. This Hercules shirt was bought on my first trip to Alicante and through my broken Spanish and a translation book, managed to establish through a sales assistant that Hercules were infact the local team from Alicante.

Photo 01-06-2013 18 25 57

Team: Elche CF (away)

Make: Puma

Year: 2005-2006?

Elche (Elx) are another local team to the families property in Spain. I hope to travel to one of their games, espeicially as they have now been promoted to La Liga.

Photo 01-06-2013 18 00 03 Photo 01-06-2013 18 00 24

Team: Newcastle United (3rd)

Make: Adidas

Year: 2005-2006

Although I am not always a fan of names and number on shirts, I make an exception for this one, which I was bought for my 21st birthday. I have some fond memories of wearing this at my 21st party, before travelling to Glasgow the next day for a gig, before getting snowed in trying to return home.

Photo 01-06-2013 18 02 00

Team: Newcastle United

Make: Adidas

Year: 2005-2007

The Albert Luque or Micheal Owen shirt as I will always remember it.

Photo 01-06-2013 18 39 33

Team: England (away)

Make: Umbro

Year: 2006-2008

A nice simple England design, which Umbro made fit very nicely. The St George’s cross on the shoulder is a particularly nice addition.

Photo 01-06-2013 18 20 13

Team: Real Murcia (training top)

Make: N/A

Year: 2007

Technichally not a shirt, but having travelled to Murcia without enough money, it was the best I could do. This was bought just before their season in La Liga.

Photo 01-06-2013 22 03 42

Team: FC Torrevieja

Make: Umbro

Year: 2007?

Another ‘local’ Spanish team, and probably the highest ranked team close to the family home in Spain. Another team who I intend to watch at some point.

Photo 01-06-2013 17 03 58

Team: Alone Guadamar CF (away)

Make: Elements

Year: 2006-2007

Guadamar are another ‘local’ team in Spain, however, they play in the local leagues towards the bottom of Spanish football. This shirt surprisingly caught my eye when visiting Guadamar.

Photo 01-06-2013 18 02 58

Team: Newcastle United

Make: Adidas

Year: 2007-2009

Despite this being the ‘relegation’ shirt, honestly I never really liked it anyway. It was too dark, and because of the cut of the collar I had to buy a size that fitted me like a tent.

07-09 NUFC signed

Team: Newcastle United

Make: Adidas

Year: 2007-2009

As above but signed by the NUFC squad.

Photo 01-06-2013 18 29 07 Photo 01-06-2013 18 28 46

Team: Greece

Make: Adidas

Year: 2008-2010

This shirt was bought in Cyprus a few years after its release. After toying with the idea of a few of the local’s ‘immitation’ shirt, a saw this one for 5 euros, and couldn’t resist. The Greek flag watermark is a great feature.

Photo 01-06-2013 18 51 34

Team: Real Madrid (away)

Make: Adidas

Year: 2008-2009

Although I prefer ‘Barca’ to Real I couldn’t argue with the beauty of this shirt, which I bought when on my honeymoon in Spain.

Photo 01-06-2013 18 51 07

Team: Valencia (2nd Liga Anniversary)

Make: Nike

Year: 2008-2009

I bought this when honeymooning in Spain too, but from a ‘sports shop’ in Benidorm. Football shirts one isle, dildos the next; pure class.

Photo 01-06-2013 18 31 57 Photo 01-06-2013 18 32 23

Team: Egypt

Make: VioSport

Year: 2009?

Although I have never been one for buying imitation shirts, my parents brought back this shirt from their 25th wedding aniversary. A great design with the legendary Abou Trika name and number on, who could say no?

Photo 01-06-2013 18 45 12

Team: England (away)

Make: Umbro

Year: 2009?

One of the England ‘Tailored by’ range. Lovely design, fit and colour.

Photo 01-06-2013 17 57 42

Team: Newcastle United

Make: Adidas

Year: 2009-2010

A final simple design by Adidas with blue trim. A successful season helped make sure the shirt was thought of even more highly.

Photo 01-06-2013 17 55 57

Team: Newcastle United (away)

Make: Adidas

Year: 2009-2010

The ‘deckchair’ shirt has become a real cult classic for NUFC. For me, I loved it, althoug h lots of my friends hated it. Its simple design, along with nice touches such as the seahorses on the bottom right and left of the shirt, and the Newcastle United ribbon on the back of the neck, helped endear it to me.

Lorient away 09-10

Team: Lorient (away)

Make: Diadora

Year: 2009-2010

On a different holiday in France, in my teens, I stayed in Quimper, very near to Lorient. I didn’t buy a Lorient shirt at the time, so have always kept a look out since.

Photo 01-06-2013 17 58 28

Team: Newcastle United

Make: Puma

Year: 2010-2011

For me, quite a nice design ruined by the awful plastic sponsor logo, sewn on club badge and strange use of different materials on the body and sleeves.

Photo 01-06-2013 18 34 54

Team: Union Berlin (Away)

Make: Do You Football

Year: 2010-2011?

Always on the lookout for less well known shirts, I loved this Union Berlin shirt when taking a break from the freezing German Christmas markets. The Union bear watermark helps give the shirt a personal touch.

Photo 01-06-2013 17 59 17

Team: Newcastle United (away)

Make: Puma

Year: 2010-2011

Simple, classy and with a nice Puma collar. Despite being let down by the sewn on club crest, Puma’s away NUFC shirt was much better than the home for their return to the Premiership.

IMG_1393

Team: NAC Breda (away)

Make: Klupp

Year: 2010-2011

I always try to keep an eye out for teams that NUFC or OM have faced in Europe. The sash design and colouring on this shirt is a nice contrast to NAC’s yellow and black home shirt.

IMG_1408

Team: Newcastle United (Supporters shirt)

Make: Puma

Year: 2011-2012

ALthough this could have been ‘too dark’ like the relegation top, the quality of Puma’s fitted sleeves and shirt made the shirt look a lot better. Add to that players like Cabaye wearing it, and a European qualification and it’s no wonder I love it. (This was my second one after some c*nt broke into our house and knicked my original one the day after I bought it).

IMG_1414

Team: Bordeaux

Make: Puma

Year: 2011-2012

I’ve always loved the Bordeaux ‘V’ design, coupled with Puma’s fitted shirt, I couldn’t resist this.

OM 11-12 Technfit

Team: Marseille (Techfit player edition)

Make: Adidas

Year: 2011-2012

This is my first ‘Techfit’ shirt, and it definitely won’t be my last! It fits like a 2nd skin and instead of sewn on Adidas stripes and logo etc. they’re all heat-pressed plastic. There’s also a plastic trim to the bottom of the shirt to stop it lifting, keeping it tight to the shorts.

IMG_1410

Team: Marseille (away)

Make: Adidas

Year: 2011-2012

After a number of poor Marseille kits (in my opinion), Adidas were back with this one. The graffiti design coupled with the gold sponsor, crest and manufacture logo kept this shirt simple and interesting at the same time.

IMG_1416

Team: Marseille (3rd)

Make: Adidas

Year: 2011-2012

IMG_1407

Team: Newcastle United (Supporters shirt)

Make: Puma

Year: 2012-2013

Sporting the unusual Puma ‘jagged edges’ this shirt works well. Helped again by the stylish cut, the gold supporters badge is set off well against the numerous gold Puma logos.

Team: Marseille (Reversible 3rd)

Make: Adidas

Year: 2012-2013

Another simple but stylish design. Orange trim, sponsor, badge and manufacture logo on one side, with an original graffiti design on the reverse. Great design from Adidas for Marseille again.

Bastia 12-13

Team: Bastia

Make: Kappa

Year: 2012-2013

OM away 13-14

Team: Marseille (away)

Make: Adidas

Year: 2013-2014

I was honestly not a huge fan of this shirt when it was first announced, the ‘pocket’ being one of the first obvious thing on the shirt. But, having seen some closer pictures of the shirt, the colours and trim along with the OM pocket and plain ‘Inter Sport’ logo all combined to make this a beautifully different kit to any other that I own. This shirt also has the official Ligue 1 patch on the sleeve and ‘Payet 17’ on the back.

Some good old classic’s there and some fond memories on how, why and where you got the shirts from

Fantastic stuff. That England Admiral shirt is a design classic. The Newcastle 1995-1997 brings back horrific memories for me! You beat Bristol City 5-0 in a 2nd round cup tie replay at Ashton Gate. We thought we had a chance after a 1-1 draw in the first fixture but clearly this was not the case. I will put together some pictures and text my own collection if you’re interested?
